Comparative Life Cycle Assessment of Tetra Pak packaging
In order to develop strong arguments about the environmental benefits of its packaging solutions and substantiate these with firm evidence, Tetra Pak asked BIO Intelligence Service to conduct a comparative Life Cycle Assessment of four types of packaging, to be validated by a critical review committee.
Objectives of the project:
- To quantify the environmental impacts of four types of Tetra Pak packaging compared with those of competing packaging products, using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology in accordance with the ISO 14040 series of standards.
- To perform a critical review of the Life Cycle Assessment, involving validation by a committee of experts.
The results of the Life Cycle Assessment were presented for each segment of the market where Tetra Pak is present:
- Milk in 1 litre cartons,
- Fruit juice in 1 litre cartons,
- Fruit juice in 250 ml cartons,
- Preserved foods in 400 ml cartons.
Results for each of these categories were provided according to the following five impact indicators: global warming, consumption of non-renewable primary energy, consumption of non-renewable resources, air acidification, and eutrophication.
