Environmental assessment of the banana industry in Guadeloupe and Martinique
In partnership with Asconit Consultant and with the support of the ADEME, BIO Intelligence Service performed an environmental assessment of the banana industry in Guadeloupe and Martinique, following the 2008-2013 Sustainable Banana Plan launched by the Guadeloupe and Martinique Banana Growers’ Association (UGPBAN).
To guarantee the success of the plan’s environmental component, the UGPBAN wanted to carry out an assessment of the environmental impacts associated with the banana industry, from the cultivation of the fruit in Guadeloupe and Martinique, to its commercialisation in France and Europe.
This assessment comprised two phases:
- A product-centred approach conducted by BIO and involving a life cycle assessment that determined the environmental impacts of bananas from the French West Indies, from their cultivation on the islands to the ripening rooms in France;
- An overview of the local situation, carried out by Asconit and focusing in particular on how much banana cultivation pollutes water catchment areas.
By combining both theoretical and actual scenarios, this dual approach made it possible to identify recommendations and optimisation solutions for stakeholders, with the aim of reducing the environmental impacts of the industry.
