Guide to minimising and recycling office waste paper

With only approximately 20% of office waste paper being collected for recycling, there is plenty of potential for improvement, particularly as paper is relatively easy to sort and recycle. Furthermore, the cost to companies and organisations of overusing paper is high and the environmental impacts are significant.
BIO Intelligence Service was consequently chosen by the ADEME to create a guide on minimising and recycling office waste paper, aimed at public and private organisations with fewer than 250 employees. BIO’s expertise on the subject of “waste” and its skills and knowledge in environmental communication allowed the group to put forward practical solutions for reducing and recycling waste paper.
The short and interactive guide will be presented on the website aimed at environmentally-conscious government departments and also in a CD-ROM format. Through a series of documents, it shows how to implement a waste paper management system – from introducing the consequences of inaction, through to setting up a sorting system, choosing a waste collection company, assessing the current situation and evaluating the process. It also contains practical tools for managing paper on a daily basis, evaluating flows, and also for involving all stakeholders in improving paper management.
This can, indeed, represent a first step towards instilling a general sustainable development approach within organisations.
The other project deliverables include producing material to promote responsible paper management, as well as recommendations regarding communications.
