BIO Intelligence Service, in conjunction with the ADEME, has created the eco-calculator – a tool for measuring the environmental footprint of products.


At one stage or another in their life cycle, the products that we design, purchase, use and throw away cause harm to the health of the planet and people. By adopting sustainable production and consumption models, it is possible to reduce these environmental impacts.

BIO’s eco-calculator measures the scale of the consequences to the environment and provides tools for overcoming them.


For all of the products included in the eco-calculator, five environmental consequences have been listed in order of importance: climate change, depletion of resources, air pollution, water pollution and toxic hazard.


For each product, the eco-calculator also provides an assessment of the greenhouse gas emissions relating to the average annual consumption of the product by a European citizen. In addition, the fun simulator built in to the eco-calculator allows the user to evaluate the environmental impacts linked to transport and energy consumption by carrying out their own simulations.
